A Home Remedy For Acne - Olive Oil

It can be counter intuitive to use an oil as a home remedy for acne when oily skin is often one of the symptoms of acne but it contains many properties that make it very effective.

The primary cause of acne is that the pores of the skin become blocked by sebum which is a grease-like substance. Generally speaking the advice for acne sufferers is to keep the skin clean and avoid any build up of grease.

If you put other oils on the skin they will only worsen the condition but olive oil is different. First of all unlike other oils, it does not leave behind any oily residue on the skin which clogs the pores and leads to further breakouts.

Olive oil contains natural anti-oxidants and vitamins and it also acts as an anti-inflamatory which can reduce the bumps. Another benefit is that olive oil acts as a moisturizer which prevents the dry flaking which can flare up and irritate the acne.

How to Use Olive Oil As a Home Remedy For Acne

There are a number of ways in which to use olive oil as a home remedy for acne. First of all make sure that you buy the pure form that is obtained from chemists. This is not the same as the variety used in cooking though that can be used if you cannot obtain the pure olive oil.

Here are a few recipes for facial masks made with olive oil:

Mix together one egg-white, 2 teaspoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of apple juice. Combine the ingredients in a small mixing bowl then apply to the face and leave to dry for around 20 minutes.

To create an exfoliating mask mix three tablespoons of olive oil with one tablespoon of salt and gently rub into the skin. Do not use around the eye area and take care to rub gently.

For dry skin, mix a tablespoon of olive oil with a tablespoon of honey and an egg yolk. Apply as before.

Although seemingly controversial, many people have found olive oil to be an effective home remedy for acne and with so many ways to use it, it is very versatile.
